Trends In Renewable Energy - Sources and Technologies

Reading the Clean Edge Report on Clean Energy Trends in 2008 I have decided to post my vision on Renewable Energy Industry trends.

  1. The electric cars are moving.
Looking at the electric cars I can make the following conclusion. While the big companies are trying and trying the Small companies are making.
    Examples:
Think, Tesla, Project Better Place/Renault-Nissan in Israel, Eliica from Japan, Miles and ZAP in the U.S., REVA in India, ZENN in Canada, Spark in China and Venturi in France.
Doing my research and visiting most of the electric car sites I can mention a few important things:Most of the cars are still prototypes.
    There is no price mentioned
Most of the companies announce 2009 for official commercial launch of their electric vehicles
  2. Green cities and green buildings
    Green Buildings
    Green Cities 2008 Conference
    Masdar Intiative
Urban sustainability, of course, is not just about new cities. Mayors of nearly 800 U.S. cities have pledged to reduce greenhouse gases to Kyoto Protocol targets, and 16 large cities worldwide have committed to upgrading the energy efficiency (by 20 to 50 percent) of city-owned buildings. That initiative, launched in 2007 with the Clinton Foundation, is funded with $1 billion each from ABN Amro, Citi Bank, Deutsche Bank, JPMorgan Chase, and UBS.
  3. Solar photo voltaic cells expansion
Recently I wrote about Photovoltaic Energy Payback Time and it is obvious that the people.
  4. Solar photovoltaics (including modules, system components, and installation) will grow from a $20.3 billion industry in 2007 to $74 billion by 2017. In 2003 the annual installations were just the small amount of 3 GW worldwide now there are 15 GW capacity.

  5. Wind Power stable growth:
I am posting only the titles and links here:
  6. US Wind Power Capacity Grew 45% in 2007
Horizon and Suzlon Sign 400 MW Wind Turbine Deal
American Superconductor Receives $70 Million Order from Chinese Wind Company
Acciona Acquires 1300MW of Wind Development Assets in Midwest
Vestas Build its First US Factory in Colorado
Windmills placed over the Great Plains and along the coasts could produce about 20 percent of U.S. electricity by the year 2030. Energy Dept. says wind power could be savior
And again to mention the Major wind power turbine manufacturers

  7. Geothermal power strikes again
As I wrote in one of my previous posts Geothermal Energy Is Hot. But what are the trends here:
  8. With recent improvements in drilling technology,
geothermal plants can now be built and operated at costs comparable to coal-fired plants – but with zero fuel cost.

A further boost could come from the so called“enhanced geothermal”. Enhanced geothermal includes drilling much deeper than conventional systems to the so-called “hot dry rocks” present throughout the planet, not just in volcanic zones.

  9. Wind power to the ships. This is one of the most interesting trend in renewable energy industry. It is not some innovative technology or idea. But it is an innovation in using the wind (again). It is a little bit like returning 1000 years ago but is still interesting. The whole idea is use kites (all sizes and shapes) attached to the ships and boats and to save on fuel (only if you have good wind speed in the right direction).
The examples and other useful ship kite links:

Summary:

I have mentioned some of the trends in renewable energy industry but If you have some news and thoughts I will be glad to read your comments below.
