Vertical Axis Wind Turbines
Wind power is one of the most discussed renewable energy sources. Some people say that the horizontal axis wind turbines has came to technological wall in their development. So what is happening with the VAWTs. Will there be a turbine based on this technology producing 1 MW and above.
Currently I do not know of any working VAWT’s producing MW’s of energy, but the size is not everything when it comes to wind power production. HAWT’s can produce megawatts of power, but VAWT’s are more versatile because the generally can operate at lower wind speeds.
To be effective HAWT’s need to be on large farms in wide open areas which is far away from where the power is needed. Where at small scale VAWT’s can be effective in urban areas, attached directly to the buildings that will be using the power.
There are currently some very interesting things being done with small scale VAWT’s by a few different company’s. check out:
Turby ( http://www.turby.nl/)
Turby is a revolutionary vertical axis wind turbine especially designed for use in an urban or built-up environment.
Quiet Revolution ( http://www.quietrevolution.co.uk/)
Quiet Revolution Ltd develops and supplies elegant renewable energy solutions, especially small wind products optimised for use at the point of energy demand.
Our goal is to promote and enable wind energy as a key technology to renewable and distributed energy generation and microgeneration.
Aerotecture ( http://www.aerotecture.com/)
Aerotecture Paradigm:
- where wind farms are big, we are small
- where wind farms are rural, we are urban
- where wind farms avoid buildings, we attach to them
- where wind farms seek single monster units, we deploy many units
- where wind farms are hundreds of miles from their ‘users’, we are right there
Magenn ( http://www.magenn.com/) -they are working on an all new type of wind turbine, nether HAWT, or VAWT. A very cool concept:
Magenn Power’s MARS is a Wind Power Anywhereв„ў solution with distinct advantages over existing Conventional Wind Turbines and Diesel Generating Systems including: global deployment, lower costs, better operational performance, and greater environmental advantages.
And here is a link to a list of main VAWT manufacturers around the world:

Hope all that helps. Wind power is an incredibly interesting, and rapidly growing field right now.
