Siemens awarded major offshore wind power contract worth more than 450 Million EUR

Siemens Energy has received an order from StatoilHydro and Statkraft to provide 88 wind turbines to the Sheringham Shoal Offshore Wind Farm off the east coast of England. Upon completion in 2011, the 315-megawatt (MW) project will provide clean energy to over 220,000 households. In addition to the supply of 88 SWT-3.6-107 wind turbines, Siemens was also awarded a five-year initial service contract, which can be extended up to 11 years. The total volume of the contract is more than EUR450 million.

Sheringham Shoal is equally owned by StatoilHydro and Statkraft through the subsidiary Scira Offshore Energy Ltd. The contract with Siemens was awarded by Scira Ltd. StatoilHydro and Statkraft announced the new partnership and go-ahead for the project on April 1.

The Sheringham Shoal Offshore Wind Farm will be located 17 to 22 km from the north Norfolk coastal town of Sheringham and five kilometers north of the offshore sand bank known as Sheringham Shoal. Comprising an area of approximately 35 square kilometers, the wind farm is in close proximity to Siemens’ Lynn and Inner Dowsing wind farm, which was only recently completed and is currently the world’s largest offshore wind farm.

Meanwhile, the frequency and scope of offshore projects continue to grow. Siemens has delivered all of its offshore projects on-time and is primed to meet the growing demand with its established fleet of 2.3 and 3.6 MW turbines. With more than 600 MW of offshore capacity installed and with an order backlog of 3,300 MW, Siemens is the leading provider of offshore wind turbines. Siemens is an experienced provider of offshore services, with a history spanning nearly two decades in maintaining turbines in the offshore environment.

Wind power is an important feature of Siemens’ environmental portfolio. In 2008, revenue from the products and solutions of Siemens’ environmental portfolio was nearly EUR19 billion, which is equivalent to around a quarter of Siemens’ total revenue.
