Canadian Minister Of Energy Sees Great Opportunities in Small Wind for Urban Environments
ANCASTER, ONTARIO, (April 8, 2009) – Cleanfield Energy™ ("Cleanfield") (TSXV: AIR),
yesterday welcomed the Honourable George Smitherman, Deputy Premier and Minister of
Energy and Infrastructure, the Honourable Ted McMeekin, MPP for Ancaster-Dundas-
Flamborough-Westdale and Minister of Government and Consumer Services, and Sophia
Aggelonitis, MPP for Hamilton Mountain for a tour of Cleanfield’s Ancaster facility which was
followed by an address by Minister Smitherman to Cleanfield’s strategic partners, suppliers, staff
and media.
During the tour, the Ministers and the MPP saw the developmental phases of Cleanfield’s
commercialized Vertical Axis Wind Turbine (VAWT) along with an operating VAWT on
Cleanfield’s rooftop which was actively harvesting renewable clean energy. The Cleanfield
VAWT, which was developed in conjunction with McMaster University along with funding from
Ontario Centres of Excellence (OCE), is designed to effectively capture the turbulent wind energy
which is associated with urban environments. The turbines can be rooftop mounted on buildings
or ground mounted and operates virtually silently.
With the Ontario government’s recent introduction of the proposed Green Energy Act which is
designed to make Ontario a North American Leader in adopting renewable energy, the tour
highlighted the huge opportunities that emerging Ontario companies like Cleanfield can contribute to climate change with its industry leading wind turbine for the urban market, but also the generation of new green jobs by utilizing a local supply chain. “It is great to see how a local
company like Cleanfield can work together with universities like McMaster University and OCE to
develop a leading edge wind technology that is at the forefront of a huge emerging market, which
also provides a great opportunity to generate local jobs” said Minister Ted McMeekin.
“Hundred meter high turbines aren’t going to work everywhere” said Minister Smitherman. “With
this exciting technology, I can see people taking advantage of mother nature in the urban
environment. In the future, I can see an Ontario with distributed power generation with hundreds
of thousands of installed point of use generators where companies and people can generate theirown electricity”.
With the Ontario Power Authority’s (OPA) recent unveiling of its proposed First Feed-In Tariff
(FIT) which guarantees pricing for various forms of electricity production including solar, wind and
other renewable energy sources, Minister Smitherman further commented that the FITs were
priced not only on technology but also “based on the project size where the smallest projects
would received the highest degree of incentives. Although roof mounted small wind generation
products were not envisioned at the time of its development, I see great opportunities for
technologies of this type to be considered in the OPA FIT model in the near future.”
"The changing landscape of the energy sector combined with our government’s commitment to
fighting climate change is an opportunity for a new green economy,” added Ms. Aggelonitis.
“Attracting early adapters like Cleanfield will ensure Hamilton can be a full participant in this
emerging economy."
“We are honoured to have Ministers Smitherman and McMeekin and MPP Agglonitis visit us
today and see first hand how Cleanfield’s small wind technology can significantly contribute to
Ontario’s vision of being a North American leader in Green Energy generation” said Tony Verrelli,
CEO of Cleanfield. “We are extremely encouraged by Minister Smitherman’s vision of distributed
power generation and his comments on an OPA FIT model which will provide incentives for
adoption of urban VAWTs alongside with other renewable technologies of its size”
