Sweden’s Largest Onshow Wind Farm Opens
Nordisk Vindkraft and HgCapital celebrate Havsnäs inauguration
Havsnäs Wind Farm, the largest onshore wind farm in Sweden, will be officially opened today at a ceremony attended by Swedish Government officials, senior industry figures, landowners and leaders of the Municipality of Strömsund, whose Chairman, Karin Stjierna, will cut the ribbon. The wind farm, located north of Strömsund in the County of Jämtland and with an installed capacity of 95.4 MW, is producing clean, renewable electricity equivalent to the needs of approximately 50,000 households every year.
The Havsnäs Wind Farm was designed and built to optimise energy capture whilst taking account of existing constraints and site sensitivities. The project consists of 48 Vestas V90 turbines, 70 kilometres of tracks, a substation and five wind measuring masts. The turbines are situated on three hills; Ritjelsberget (21 turbines), Järvsand (16 turbines) and Ursåsen (11 turbines). Construction lasted for almost two and a half years, commencing in March 2008 and completing in summer 2010. Nordisk Vindkraft carried out the construction, using sub-contractors and local workers for the bulk of the building work.
The wind farm is 75% owned by HgCapital and 25% by Nordisk Vindkraft, leasing the land from local landowners and SCA. The site and wind farm operation is managed by Nordisk Vindkraft.
Nordisk Vindkraft’s CEO Arne Lorenzen said: “I am grateful to the local community and the local stakeholders for their support throughout the project lifetime from development through construction. I am proud of our very competent development and construction teams at Nordisk Vinkdraft for their continuous commitment to environmental protection, health & safety and the successful delivery of this project. The Havsnäs Wind Farm demonstrates that wind energy is viable and successful in Sweden. There is great potential for further development, which can bring sustainable and clean power as well as employment opportunities and economic benefits to the local communities.
He added: “We welcome ambitious national targets but also have to stress the need for a stable and predictable regulatory framework for the Swedish market to maintain developer and investor confidence and allow the wind power potential and its benefits to be fully realized.”
