Third International Conference ENERGY & CLIMATE CHANGE Carbon Capture and Storage – 21-22 October 2010 Sofia
The conference will bring together experts, managers and representatives of relevant institutions in the South-East Europe region who have the knowledge, interest and authority to help mitigate the climatic changes associated with the power industry.
The main highlights of the two-day forum will be the European and national energy policies and trends for combating the climate change, low-carbon power generation and carbon capturing technologies, energy management and environment protection, energy efficiency and related technologies, financing and investments.
The conference will provide a holistic approach to managing climate change, outline the role of every participant and emphasise the need for joint actions on our common road towards sustainable development.
А special focus of the two-day forum will be given to issues related to CO2 capture, transport and storage (CCS) as one of the priority solutions which could reduce annual CO2 emissions in the EU by 0.6-1.7 billion tonnes.
The new EU directive on the geological storage of carbon dioxide, agreed as part of the EU climate and energy package (IP/09/628), sets out a legal framework that will enable the safe operation of CCS in Europe. The European Economic Recovery Plan has allocated €1,050 million to CCS demonstration projects inside the EU. This large-scale deployment of CCS could suggest another way of economical improvement and adherence to the EU environmental goals.
The conference attendees will be presented with the results of the detailed EBRD-funded study “Towards a Zero Emission Demonstration Plant in Bulgaria”, developed by WorleyParsons and aimed to investigate feasibility of CCS with geological storage in Bulgaria.
“Energy and Climate Change” conference will be the place for presenting also the legal and
environmental frameworks required for CCS implementation, associated cost and economic
considerations, and funding options, as well as reports from the countries in the region, and the position of EU representatives.
