New Solar Performance Database By NREL

The Energy Department’s National Renewable Energy Laboratory (NREL) has launched an initiative to build an open-source database of real-world performance from thousands of solar photovoltaic (PV) facilities throughout the United States. As part of the Department’s SunShot Initiative, the Open Solar Performance and Reliability Clearinghouse (O-SPaRC) will help financiers evaluate the production risk of operational PV power plants across the country.

O-SPaRC is designed to improve financiers’ access to public capital by enabling credit-rating agencies and potential investors to assess the underlying risk of the asset class. It will also give the private market the tools to develop investment vehicles such as asset-backed securities.

This effort supports NREL’s Solar Access to Public Capital (SAPC) working group, a multi-year project funded by the SunShot Balance of Systems Program to facilitate and hasten the PV industry’s access to public capital through securitized financial instruments and other investment vehicles.

NREL contracted with SunSpec Alliance to build the anonymous performance dataset. Visit the SunSpec Alliance website to learn more or to participate in the data collection effort.
